Northeast Petroleum University is in the first batch of schools that are allowed to receive foreign students by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.Northeast Petroleum University began to enroll foreign students to study in China in 1996. Foreign students from more than 20 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and America add up to over 100, with academic students accounting for 94.2%, including many of them obtaining the HSK Test certificate above level 7. The school particularly established the Chinese Teaching and Research Office for Foreigners as the education basis for cultivating foreign students to study in China. In 2005, the school began to enroll non-language- major foreign students. With years of practice, the school has accumulated relatively rich experience in teaching and management of foreign students. Currently, it has a team consisting of experienced teaching staff, with a reasonable echelon and a combination of full-time and part-time teachers. Regarding the teaching arrangement, with the purpose of cultivating the practical communicative ability in Chinese, different teaching methods are adopted to arouse students’ learning interest. With respect to thecurriculum setting, besides compulsory courses, there are also optional courses in which foreign students are interested.
Northeast Petroleum University enrolls international students from foreign countries to receive non-academic education, which is mainly about learning Chinese language and characters and Chinese traditional culture, cultivating and improving students’ ability to communicate in Chinese and laying a solid language foundation for further study of all kinds of specialized knowledge and engagement in communication in Chinese. According to the students’ actual situation, they may choose the learning timevoluntarily. The shorter learning is one month, and the longer learning lasts for half a year to 2 years. There are 20 weeks in the spring semester and 20 weeks for the fall semester, in total 40 weeks of two semesters (one academic year). There are 20 to 24 class hours weekly, a total of 800-960 class hours. Students are taught ina small class, with 10-15 students in each class. For the purpose of cultivating communicative ability in Chinese, the teaching contents are centered on listening, speaking, reading and writing. In combination withaspeed-up educational program and intensive training, students are enabled to master thearticulation manner ofChinese pronunciation in the shortest time and basic knowledge of Chinese grammar. Through the two-year learning, they can know over 2000 Chinese characters well, master and understand almost 5000 modern Chinese words, basically can communicate with others in standard Chinese Mandarin in a relatively smooth manner and express theiropinions and thoughts & feelings withacertain number of relatively complicated sentence patterns in the form of written language. If they participate in the HSK, they can achieve level 6 to level 8 (Medium Level C to A).
