The discipline was founded in 1961 and was authorized to grant a master's degree in 1986. In 2000, it was approved as a key discipline in Heilongjiang Province for the General Survey and Exploration of Mineral Resources. In 2003, it was approved to confer the second-level doctorate. In 2006, geological resources and geological engineering were approved as first-level disciplines that were authorized to grant master's degrees. In the same year, earth exploration and information technology were approved as key disciplines in Heilongjiang Province. In 2007, it was approved as a post-doctoral research service station for geological resources and geological engineering. In 2011, it was approved as a first-level discipline for doctoral degree authorization in Geological Resources and Geological Engineering. The discipline focuses on major national energy strategies, oil and gas industries, and economic and social needs, adheres to the characteristics of oil and gas geology and geophysical exploration, and forms six advantages and distinctive technologies, including: Oil and Gas Preservation Condition Research, Reservoir Architecture and Remaining Oil Characterization, Integrated Exploration of Shale Oil and Gas Geological Engineering, and Seismic Data Migration Imaging Procedural.It has become an important scientific and technological innovation base in the oil, gas, and energy fields in China. The discipline pays attention to the construction of teaching and research platforms and faculty teams. It has established the National Energy Research and Development Center, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, the National Key Laboratory Cultivation Base, the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the National Practice Education Base, etc., totaling 18 provincial and ministerial level and above teaching and scientific research platforms; a high-level scientific research and teaching team led by academicians and "973" chiefs, with Longjiang scholars as the core, and young and middle-aged outstanding scientific and technological talents as the backbone, has been formed. We have established one Heilongjiang "Leading Goose" team, two provincial leading talents echelons, one provincial Natural Science Foundation Research team, two provincial science and technology innovation teams, one provincial excellent supervisor team for graduate students, one provincial teaching team, and one provincial ideological and political teaching team. The discipline thoroughly implements the national postgraduate education policy of "Four Practices" for students' development and implements the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education. With the support of large teams, large platforms, and large projects, we completed the integration of science and education, and the integration of production and education to educate people, and we established joint training bases for graduate students in Daqing, Jilin, and other oilfields, and we established an integrated talent training system that is oriented by industry needs, characterized by oil and gas geological exploration, and centered on the cultivation of practical and innovative capabilities. To meet the needs of national oil and gas resources and regional revitalization, the discipline has strengthened recruitment publicity in the central and western regions. Since 2016, the proportion of students in the central and western regions has exceeded 70%, providing a talent pool for the development of the central and western regions. Since the establishment of the discipline, it has always adhered to the concept of educating people through Daqing Spirit and the running characteristics of all-round and multi-level production, education, and research cooperation, and has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents, represented by Fu Chengyu, the former chairman of Sinopec. At present, the discipline aims at the major strategic needs of the national energy revolution and implements the strategy of "Strengthen the discipline of onshore petroleum, expand the discipline of offshore petroleum, and strengthen the discipline of new energy," and forms a school-running pattern of "one discipline, three places, and four institutes." As always, we will increase in-depth cooperation with "Three Barrels of Oil" and the China Geological Survey Bureau to fully support the century-old Daqing oilfield construction and the scientific and technological progress of the petroleum industry.
