The Key Laboratory of Enhanced Oil Recovery (Northeast Petroleum University), Ministry of Education, formerly named as the Ministerial Research Laboratory of Oil Displacement Mechanism of the Ministry of Petroleum Industry in 1979, was approved as the Key Laboratory of Heilongjiang Higher Education Institutions in 2001, the Key Laboratory of Heilongjiang Province in 2004 and the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education in 2007.
Based on the National Key First-Level Discipline of Oil and Gas Engineering of Northeast Petroleum University, the laboratory has a Post-Doctoral Research Station for Oil and Gas Engineering. Considering the national energy security strategy and the development needs of the petroleum industry, the laboratory focuses on enhancing oil and gas recovery. The laboratory has made tremendous success and breakthroughs in chemical flooding, percolation mechanism, fine description of remaining oil, high efficiency rock breaking, and undersurface and surface integrated oil and gas gathering and transportation. It has formed distinct characteristics and advantages in fundamental theoretical study and oilfield application technology. Its overall level is leading in China, and the level of chemical flooding technology is leading in the world. At present, the laboratory has four sustainable research directions: oil displacement mechanism and technology; percolation law; reservoir description technology; special well and reservoir simulation technology; and complex fluid flow and treatment technology.
After more than 40 years of development, the laboratory has cultivated a strong research team. 87 researchers have doctoral degrees, including 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 39 doctoral supervisors, 46 professors, and 32 associate professors. The laboratory covers an area of more than 11,000 square meters and its equipment is worth 130 million yuan. In the past 10 years, the laboratory has made great achievements, undertaking 52 national-level projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National "973" Projects. 48 scientific research awards at or above the provincial level or ministerial level have been won, including 1 special prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 7 provincial and ministerial first prizes, 1 Ho Leung Ho LeeScienceandTechnologyProgressAward, and 1 China Patent Gold Award. It has published more than 1500 papers in domestic core journals, of which more than 500 papers are included by SCI and EI. It has published 21 monographs. It has applied for 289 patents, including 235 invention patents, and authorized 98 invention patents.
The laboratory pays particular attention to domestic and international communication and exchange, and international academic exchange and cooperation is steadily growing. The laboratory has assigned more than 100 teachers and students to Germany, the United States, Canada, Russia, and other countries to pursue higher degrees, engage in advanced studies, or participate in international conferences. It has established a friendly partnership with Missouri University of Science and Technology in the United States and the Clauthtal University of Technology in Germany. The laboratory has successfully hosted many academic conferences, such as the International Conference on Enhancing Oil and Gas Recovery. The laboratory has become an important talent incubation platform as well as a scientific and technological innovation platform in the field of enhancing oil and gas recovery in China.
