Introduction to the School of Humanities and Sciences

The School of Humanities and Sciences is the Marxism-Leninism Teaching and Research Office of the Northeast Petroleum Institute, founded in 1960. In 1985, it was renamed as the Marxism-Leninism Teaching and Research Department in 1997, and it was reshuffled as the School of Humanities and Sciences officially in 2004.

The school has a strong faculty team. Currently, there are 43 faculty members, including 34 full-time teachers, 10 professors, and 15 associate professors. Among them, there are five teachers with doctoral degrees and one visiting scholar from the University of Southern California. There are 6 teachers and teams with the title of National Ideological and Political Demonstration Course, 1 provincial youth innovative talents, 2 provincial individuals of advanced teaching morality and style, 1 provincial women pacesetter, 1 provincial excellent ideological and political worker, 3 distinguished professors, and 2 university teaching masters.The school consists of three teaching units: the Department of Public Administration, the Department of Sociology, and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, which undertake the teaching tasks of nearly 150 courses in four disciplines: Political Science, Management, Sociology, and Literature.

The School of Humanities and Sciences is constantly committed to the development and construction of disciplines. It has 1 provincial first-class major, 1 first-level master's degree program in Political Science, 1 master's degree program for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and 1 Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Among them, the Master of Social Work (MSW) program is the first professional master of social work degree awarding unit in the province that was approved in 2014. In 2015, 28 students were enrolled for the first time, becoming an important force in promoting the training of social work professionals in the province and serving the local society and economic development. The school offers four undergraduate programs: Administration, Social Work, Chinese Language and Literature, and Public Service Management. There are 136 graduate students and 781 full-time undergraduates.

The School of Humanities and Sciences has achieved fruitful results in scientific research. It has formed its own characteristics and advantages in the fields of party building, organizational culture, social work, and public administration. In recent years, it has presided over 4 national social science fund projects, 1 humanity and social science fund project of the Ministry of Education, 1 fund project of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and 16 provincial social science fund projects.

The school has made remarkable achievements in teaching reform. In recent years, it has received one national excellent resource sharing course, one provincial excellent course, three provincial teaching achievement prizes, two provincial first-class courses, one provincial curriculum ideological and political demonstration course, one national curriculum ideological and political demonstration course, two Internet + provincial silver medals and one bronze medal, and two state-level major creation project approvals.Other than that, it has presided over 17 provincial (ministerial) level scientific research subjects and 8 provincial education planning projects.

The school has permanently attached great importance to contact, cooperation, and service with the government and significant petroleum enterprises. It has established cooperative relations with many enterprises and institutions, such as the Daqing Civil Affairs Bureau, the Daqing Administrative Service Center, and the Fourth Oil Production Plant of Daqing Oilfield, and opened up many practical teaching bases. Moreover, it regularly provides training and consultation on public management, sociology, party construction, and social development theory for relevant local government departments, enterprises, and institutions, which expands the development space of the school.

The School of Humanities and Sciences emphasized the cultivation of students' theoretical literacy and practical ability and has trained a large number of professionals for the government, universities, and major state-owned enterprises such as CNPC, SINOPEC, and CNNOC. A total of nearly 1,800 students have graduated and started to work. With a solid professional theoretical foundation, a down-to-earth style, and steady and excellent working ability, they are active in government agencies, oil field enterprises, and other units, becoming the backbone of the work and gaining consistent praise from employers.

Under the correct leadership of the party committee of the university, the School of Humanities and Sciences adheres to the "discipline leadership, scientific research booster, student-oriented principle, local service" concept, being down-to-earth, forging ahead, striving hard for a better tomorrow, and striving to make a greater contribution in the process of building a characteristic high-level university with the multi-disciplinary coordinated development of Northeast Petroleum University.
